Do I have to complete the online Scholastic Surf Series Student Membership and Waiver form if I am not competing on the team?
YES! Due to insurance requirements, coverage is needed for competitive and non-competitive team members.

Do I have to participate in the “try out assessment” for the team if I was on the team last year?
YES. Last year’s team members are not guaranteed a starting spot on the team.
Do I have to do the swim test if I did it last year?
NO. A previously passed swim test will clear you of this requirement.
Do I have to do the swim test if I’ve completed a Jr. Lifeguard program?
NO. Simply bring us proof of your participation in a Jr. Lifeguard program in order to waive this requirement.
Do I have to attend practice?
NO. We will normally do our best to determine the best possible options for locations and times. Competitive team members are encouraged to attend all practices at the coaches designated location the week of a contest. Non-competitive team members are not required to attend. However, non-competitive team members will only improve their abilities by practicing. Therefore we encourage everyone to participate.
Can I be on the surf team & play another sport?
YES. We applaud our surf team members for having talent and time to play other sports.
Do I have to be at every contest if I am not competing?
NO. We simply encourage all team members to be at all contests to support our team.
If I tryout and don’t qualify as a competitor, can I still be on the team?
YES. We would love to have you practice with the team in the event we need an alternate for any contest due to unforeseen circumstances with another competitor.
When does the Marco Surf Team have “fun” team building events?
We will have as many fun team building events as we can throughout the year! Our donations, sponsorship, and fundraising will give us the opportunities to hold events.
How many competitive surfers will the Marco Surf Team have?
Approximately 30 - 35 based on the coach’s discretion and available funds. The Scholastic Surf Series (SSS) will normally have two middle school surfing divisions.
Division 1 will often consist of (9) Boy Shortboarders, (3) Boy Longboarders, (3) Girl Shortboarders, (3) Girl Longboarders, and (1) co-ed bodyboarder; (A total of 19 Division 1 surfers).
Division 2 will often consist of (6) Boy Shortboarders, (2) Boy Longboarders, (2) Girl Shortboarders, and (1) Girl Longboarder.
Division 1 and 2 will be separate with their own heats, their own ratings, and their own trophies.
What happens during the tryout heat?
Up to six surfers, wearing different color jerseys, will have 15 minutes to catch the best 2-3 waves they can, doing as many maneuvers at the critical point of each wave. Judging will be determined by the Marco Surf Team Coach and/or a pre-determined team of judges.
